Getting to know our fellow Future Influencers

After having run two successful Future Influencer breakfasts we thought it would be a good idea to spend a bit more time getting to know each other. So instead of the usual morning affair, with everyone rushing off to a full day at the office, we moved the event to late afternoon.

A touch of excitement was added as guests arrived at the @Waterloo, Alice in Wonderland themed offices, where they were confronted by a statue of a giant white rabbit! The presentations started promptly at 4:30, followed by some well deserved refreshment and catching up with a good mix of old and new faces.  

An important part of advancing your career is building those relationships with professional connections. But before the networking could begin it was time to gain a bit more industry insight from fellow influencers.

We kicked off with a presentation from our very own Chris Roberts on DC Regulatory Guidance. With a background in Administration and Governance, Chris now provides employers and Trustees with advice on scheme management. After giving a bit of background, with a comparison between the Code of Practice 13 and DC Regulatory Guidance, Chris went on to discuss the key DC focus areas and finished off with an actions timeline. Next up was Bushra Chaudry from Trustee Solutions providing an update on the Pensions Ombudsman. Having managed schemes through the PPF and FAS process and providing trustees support and scheme secretarial services for on-going schemes, Bushra was well equipped to do so. She focused on what the risks were, and then how to identify and manage them. For a full breakdown on the risks download Bushra’s presentation here.

Tharusha Rajapakse, a Senior Associate in Trowers & Hamlins’ Employment and Pensions department, followed on. Tharusha advises both public and private sector clients on issues relating to pensions law, but today her focus was on the public sector. She gave us a rundown on issues facing public sector schemes covering everything from recent changes to outsourcing and Fair Deal guidance – download the full presentation here.

All three presentations prompted a lot of debate and discussion around the table, and unfortunately we ran out of time! This meant that our chairman, Mike Lallali’s round table discussion on firms working together has been moved to the next event, as we didn’t want to cut into our networking time.

All in all, another great event.
